Making Green Economies Sustainable Economies
Kristi Disney and Elizabeth Bastida attended “Towards a Fair Future of Using Natural Resources for Sustainable Development,” an October 17, 2011 gathering in Berlin, Germany, hosted by the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy. The conference, attended by natural resources and sustainable development experts from the U.S., Germany, and beyond, focused on sustainable resource management for green economies. Participants discussed potential regulatory approaches that would help meet the increasing demand for minerals such as platinum, gallium, copper, and phosphorus that are currently required in green technologies, without shifting the environmental burden to source countries. Participants reviewed a discussion paper for this conference that will be finalized for presentation in early 2012, leading up to the Rio 2012 Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
